South Texas Plains

The Alamo - Originally built as a Spanish mission, and later transformed into a makeshift fort which became an important battlesite during the Texas-Mexican war, this downtown San Antonio locale is Texas' top tourist attraction.

Choke Canyon State Park

The Rio Grande River Valley, including Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park near Mission, is scenic and provides an excellent place for birdwatching, with over 500 species.

Spanish missions
This region has some of the country's best-preserved examples of Spanish mission architecture. The missions in San Antonio and Goliad are particularly impressive.
